At the end of class today we were discussing why the EU has not responded to the events in Libya through the CSDP.  Below are a few articles that I think shed some light on that issue.

Global Response to Libyan Uprising

The global response to the uprising in Libya has varied drastically from one country and region to the next. While some have argued that the United States (US) has not done enough to support the Libyan people, the US has taken the leas among other state actors. The United Nations (UN), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), European Union (EU), and other state actors have acted only after being queued by the US and even then to a lesser extent. The revolts in Libya began on February 18th, by the 23rd the US promises support for the Libyan revolt, on the 25th UN calls for sanctions against Libya, the 28th sees the EU impose the same restrictions at the UN with few changes. While all this is happening, the US and Great Brittan (GB), among others, are negotiating within NATO to impose a no-fly zone over Libya.

After a conversation I had earlier this evening, I became curious about the salience of the Greek debt crisis in Europe and around the world.  So, I used everyone’s favorite quick research tool, Google.  In this case I took a look at Google Insights for Search which is commonly used in the blogging community to find what topics and key words are trending high Google searches.

French Social Media and Facebook Alternatives

Posted by Frank C Jones  Published in Inspired, Philosophy, politics

Facebook LoginSo, my post listing 31 Alternatives to Facebook and Other Social Media Giants was mentioned by a social media consultant in France.  It generated a few visits to my site and I figured I should checkout what they were saying.  The article was written in Franch which, being a monolingual citizen of the US, is not one of the languages I speak.  Enter, Google Translate to facilitate this conversation.   I ran through the machine translation of the site and got the general idea of the article (Facebook has disagreeable privacy policies, but they are the biggest social media site on the web, so we’re just going to have to take what they’ll give us).   Afterward I thought I would throw my two cents into the conversation.  I’ve copied my comments below in both English and machine translated French so you too can weigh in on this debate.

ZEITGEIST

Posted by Frank C Jones  Published in politics

Have you heard about the movie “ZEITGEIST”?  My sister had watched it and said that I should take a look.  Having just completed watching both of the videos, it has a sequal that is out now.  I think that they have raised some very interesting ideas, questions, and positions.  I’ve not had time to investigate the truth behind all of their statments and, sadily, I’m not educated in history enough to point out their falicies without consulting a few books first.  I would be very interested to hear other people’s arguments, both for and against the information presented in these two films.  The original film is, “ZEITGEIST: THE MOVIE“, and the sequal is, “ZEITGEIST: ADDENDUM“.  They are presented by the folks who have put together the sites, here and here.  The sequal mentions the Venus project several times and more information about that can be found here.  Let me know your thoughts and please try to use proveable and factual accounts as much as possible, if something is only your opinion just label it as such and don’t try to present it as fact.  Let’s have a discussion about this in the comments.
